Migraine Medicines
Migraine Medicines and Cluster Migraines Research.
Migraines are a common problem that is faced by people frequently mostly due to the type of hectic lifestyles that people are leading today. Thus there has been a rise in the demand for migraine medicines across the nations.
Migraine medicines are classified according to their purpose in the body i.e. either as preventive drugs or as pain-killers. The preventive medicines are taken regularly so as to reduce the chances of migraine attacks occurring. The forms of these drugs include antidepressants which help alleviate pain by affecting the level of serotonin and other brain chemicals. Cardiovascular drugs help prevent migraines by regulating the blood pressure. But they may have some effects on the patient such as drowsiness and dizziness. Another preventive migraine medicine is cyproheptadine which is usually administered to children. It’s an antihistamine that affects the serotonin levels in the brain.
The pain-relieving migraine medicines are taken in order to suppress the pain in a migraine attack that has already occurred. These include triptans that are used to treat severe migraines and have special chemicals that help relieve pain, nausea and sensitivity to light. However, they are not recommended for persons prone to heart attacks or stroke. Anti-nausea migraine medicines are effective for treating migraines that combine nausea symptoms. Opiates that contain narcotics are also effective for relieving migraine pains.
Another major migraine medicine that relieves pain in the patients is NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammation drugs). They are more effective when treating moderate pains but may require additional drugs for severe migraines. These migraine medicines should not be taken for long as they have adverse health effects such as ulcers, bleeding of the gastrointestinal and even rebound headaches.
A point of note for those taking migraine medicines is that it’s usually unlikely to stop migraine attacks completely but their severity can be reduced. Thus keeping a migraine diary would be important to check whether the medicine is effective.
